per distacco o per un millesimo l'importante ? vincere, ed a questo mondo chi vince ? considerato il migliore, pura logica docet.
Il times lo elegge il miglior sportivo, c'entra poco la finanza ecc ecc.... si parla di sportivo.
Poi se non erro ? il campione del mondo in carica.... Ha perso un paio di scontri diretti ? gi? si dice che le prende regolarmente. A me sembra che ogni hanno sia sempre lui a mettere tutti in riga.Comment

It is hard to imagine Roger Federer saying that. The Swiss tennis player with the swashbuckling manner has a claim on the mantle, of course, but the criteria I use for greatness goes beyond mere talent. You need to dominate your sport, be the greatest of all-time in your field and then transcend it with a colourful personality. The latter disqualifies most sportsmen who are only interesting because of their talent.
Usain Bolt is different. He has personality. Bags of it. He has been the biggest thing to happen in sport in the last two years, but, at the end of the day, it is hard to use terms such as "genius" when talking about a man whose metier is predominantly about a natural, physical talent, rather than the vast array of nuanced skills employed by Federer and others.
The answer, then, is Valentino Rossi, the motorcyclist who broke his leg in practice for the Italian Grand Prix at the weekend. I can hear your groans but here are the five reasons why.
1) Achievement Anyone with a claim on "the greatest" tag must have done a bit. Rossi has won seven world titles at the highest level, plus ones at 125cc and 250cc. He disproved the theory that motorsport is all about the machine by switching from all-conquering Honda to ailing Yamaha and winning another title straightaway. He has more than 100 grand prix wins and, until Sunday, had ridden in 230 successive races. Some of the wins have been legendary. Needing only lower positions to take titles, he has risked all for the sheer hell of winning.
2) Talent The man who discovered Rossi, Carlo Pernat, put it best as he recalled watching the young Italian ride on the edge and beyond. "In my mind I thought, he's either a champion or dead soon." Jerry Burgess, his crew chief, says the reason Rossi has had so few crashes is his mind is more active and he corrects mistakes before others see them. "I don't think there's such a thing as natural ability," he told me. "It's about mental application. It's the little things driving the section of the rain that processes information. The electric pulses that send messages to Valentino, Tiger Woods and Roger Feeder are faster than in you and me." Burgess reasoned that had they chosen different paths, Rossi would be Wimbledon champion and Federer a biking legend.
3) Rivals Any true great needs rivals. Ali had one in Frazier. Federer has one in Nadal. Rossi had one in Max Biaggi and it fermented because of a deliciously dramatic mutual antipathy. Rossi famously gave Biaggi the finger at 150mph after nearly being elbowed off the track in Suzuka. He laughed when others vandalised Biaggi's hire car one night at Mugello. He waved to Biaggi when he looked back during a title decider, trying to undermine his rival's confidence. And then they had a punch-up behind the podium after the Catalan Grand Prix in 2001. Next came Sete Gibernau, a true threat, until Rossi destroyed him with some theatrics that included imposing a so-called curse on the Spaniard. It was dismissed as asinine stuff, but Gibernau, then the second-best rider in the world, never did win another race. Now Rossi is facing a threat from a string of young guns. Can he come back from his injury at the age of 31? It is all part of the legend.
4) Status Some would disqualify Rossi because they would suggest motorcycle racing is not a big enough, mainstream sport to merit the mantle. They are wrong. Bands of 200,000 fans regularly watch races abroad and huge crowds watch races in the UK. Rossi is often quoted as being Italy's highest-paid sportsman, ahead of all that country's footballers, which is why he said he was "serene" after being forced to pay a ?24 million tax bill back in 2008.
5) Fun This is what sets Rossi apart from the rest. In a world of anodyne sportsmen and PR speak, he has a riot of fun wherever he goes. Hence, his post-race celebrations ranging from stopping on his victory lap, nipping into a Portaloo in the centre of the circuit and emerging to rapturous applause from 200,000 (a true Life of Brian moment) to having friends dress as traffic police and booking him for speeding in the pit lane. On the eve of the first Chinese Grand Prix in 2005 he told his paymasters he needed an early night and could not attend a conference with every Yamaha dealer in the country committed to coming to see their hero. He was then caught red-handed by same paymasters having a night on the town. He partied until 4am but got up the next day to win. And this really is the killer criterion, something that puts Rossi on a one-man pedestal. He is unique. A throwback. Nobody has married personality and sporting genius to such telling effect since Ali. Let's hope he comes back soon.Comment
